It's Official

From our program rep, in answer to my query about what to do:

I know you want to run this weekend but I strongly recommend against it. It's much more important for you to rest and heal completely before tackling this distance. Remember, there is no single run that will make or break your training or marathon performance. We have a 26 miler coming up and if you do 23 instead, you'll be more than ready for race day. I also recommend you stop running altogether for a while. At least until this clears up.

Sucks the big one.

Does indeed suck, but you'll be better for it! I had to miss a 20-miler right before my big race because of an overuse injury, and honestly, I think I was better for it. You'll be OK :) (And I totally remember Groundhog Day! Love that movie! LOL!)

I think that we dismiss rest days and time off as an unproductive part of our training, but surely they must be just as critical to our bodies as our training days. I am often quick to sneak in an extra workout here or there, so surely logic would follow that some extra rest and recovery time would be just a good for you mentally and physically. I am sure this will all work out for you. Stay positive and use this temporary break as a critical part of your training. Wishing you the best. Take care.

That sounds very reasonable and wise. It's frustrating this far into your training but a very worthwhile investment in your body's recovery. When it's time for the next long run, you'll be ready.

i'm with everyone else... it will indeed suck to miss a training day, but your body will thank you for it!

but when do i start running again? and after giving so much "advice" to others...i am now at a loss as to whether to see a doctor and which kind..a podiatrist, orthopod?

I totally feel your pain. I'm kind of in a similar situation now. (I just started up again yesterday, and I'm taking it slow.) So unfortunately, I can't help much with advice. But I can give moral support! (For what it's worth.)

So, do what you gotta do, and take some time off. I totally know how hard that is. But with a little rest hopefully you'll feel better, and get back into it. I spent yesterday reorganizing my training schedule to account for this slowdown. It can be done.

Good luck, and fell better!

Gah. That sucks. I don't have advice, just sympathy. But it sounds like you have a responsive program rep, so I'd probably send a follow-up email with all your questions re: when to start again and whether to see a doc.

it's excellent advice, even if it is hard to hear. It is better to miss a few training runs than run, make it worse and be out for 6 weeks. If you are really frustrated you could try pool running (has to be done in the deep end), it will keep your cardio up. You could also see a massage therapist who specializes in runners.

Who needs a doctor? I have everything I need right here! you guys rock! i'm going to try the elliptical tonight, slow for 30 min., see what happens. I promise to stop if I feel even a twinge.

This does indeed suck. Who needs a doctor? You do - a physical therapist (not strictly a doctor but a medical professional, none the less). Please - find one and get a program for recovery. You won't regret it! Winging it by trying this and trying that and seeing if it hurts is okay but if it does hurt than that will set you back. Better to have a trained professional assess your injury and tell you what will help you recover quickly. Call a Sports Medicine outfit or just call PTs until you find one who specializes in sports injuries.

Sorry I'm just joining in Jeanne, I've been taking a week off from blogging/running(gulp!)in part becasue of my own aches and pains and for some mental r and r and non obbession over marathon. ha. like that is going to happen. Ok, I've also been really busy!

I think you will still be ok for your race even wtih this break. You'll come back and when you do, you'll want it more!
