On the Run

This just in: I, (me, Jeanne, Not Born to Run), ran this morning! Outside! For two miles!! In 25 minutes!! For the first time (not counting evil eight mile run in the rain) in two weeks! Or is it three!! I'm not sure!!!

I had a different PT yesterday; she was all "Why aren't you running outside? And you think you're going to run a marathon in two weeks?" Grrrr. I wish they'd get their stories straight, since the other PT, the imfamous PAT, said the opposite, um, just last week.

In any case, just yesterday, and then last night, and then again when I woke up this morning, I thought: "Hmm, my leg isn't killing me anymore. I can walk down stairs without searing pain. I'm not limping!"

So, with my PT's OK, off I went this morning, filled with something akin to terror. I shuffled/ran for two miles. It hurt a little bit but not too much. I kept thinking: "Can I possibly do this for 26 miles in 2 weeks?" I stretched before and again when I got back in, and so far, no ill affects. Tomorrow I'll hit the elliptical again, then try another run on Thursday. Our last long group run is Saturday, eight miles. Not sure what to do about that yet. This is definitely an exercise in one day at a time.

In other news just in: I've been tagged by a. maria, (whose marathon is coming up fast!).

Here are the rules...
1. Go into your archives.
2. Find your 23rd post.
3. Find the fifth sentence (or the closest one to it)
4. Post the text of your sentence in your blog along with these rules.
5. Tag five other people.

My 23rd post (is that some reference to the 23rd psalm?? Hmmm...): "And That's a Wrap!"

Fifth sentence:

Today's rest will ensure that I kill tomorrow night's 8K, or rather, 4.970969536-mile race, my very first.

See? It's always about rest with me. I've been resting my head off for the past three weeks.

I did it and found that the 23rd post was the last game I played. Go figure.

Glad you had a run but do take it easy!

Well done! Maybe all the bruising was worth it! Thanks for the tagging, I don't even know if I have 23 posts!
- - -> I put up a pic! ;-)

Yay for the PT's who say 'keep running!' Boo for PT's who inflict bodily harm. That's all I'll say about that.

I'm so glad you were able to get out and run!

Chris: You are a cool kid! whoo hoo!

Lara: Yeah, what you said. It's funny, the first PT (the infamous PAT) IS a runner, has run marathons and she was the one urging me not to run! The part-time runner, (for whom I haven't yet thought of a suitable acronym), is urging me to run, saying it's critical to get over the fear of pain, that a lot of it is mental/ psychological at this point, and I have to build my confidence back up.

Makes you want to scream, doesn't it?

you're right. i'm a dummy. i'm not running with inserts. bad bad bad idea. goes against everything i've ever been told about race day.

so. back to my ice/ibuprofen/bio-freeze plan.

ah well. it'll rock all the same!

ohhh. okay. yeah. the nike running site has all altitude and pace calculators for all the Nike marathons (chicago, honolulu, l.a., etc..) so you can put in whatever time you want to come in at, and they'll give you the splits you need, taking into consideration the hills, etc...

which is awesome cuz then instead of just being like okay. 11:20 minute miles.. now i have a little cushion for the big hills (MILE SEVEN!!) and the down hills, etc.

so, 11:00 for my first mile is actually going to be pretty slow, considering all the excitement i'm sure i'll feel... lately i've been running a smidge faster than "normal"...but combine excitement with possible pain, i think its a pretty good little plan.

running chick's pace thing ROCKS because then, when you hit "calculate pace", it will give you all your mileage times. so like mile 3 i can look down and see that i should be, according to my plan, 33:38 minutes into my run. so if i'm ahead, or behind, i'll know by how many minutes, instead of just paying attention to the splits themselves and jeez this is a really long comment!

but so i copied her pace thing into excel, and made a pace band that gives me my mileage time, AND my split per mile, so i can have all the info right at my fingertips (or...wrist!)

i'm a total nerd, but hey. ya gotta do what ya gotta do, right?!

btw, also get a pat strap for the race. its different from that knee brace. it is a thin strap that goes around the thigh just above the knee. It helps!

i know, right?! a Tiffany Necklace!! how cool is that?

at first i was bummed, b/c i want a medal...but THIS i can wear ALL THE TIME (and you know i will) so it'll be my little portable "i can do anything..i'm a marathoner" reminder... so i actually love it!

plus its a great reason to do another M so i can get the medal!! teehee

ok. put in all your various times in her pace thing, for all 26.2 miles... then when you hit "generate paceband" (er whatever it says) it'll give you a pace band that will give you your cumulative time..

i then went and manually entered all the numbers into excel... i'm not an excel wizard, so you probably COULD just do it in excel, but i dont have the time (or inclination) to figure out how.. but what was key, for me, was the cumulative time, which her pace thing was the only thing that did that after entering my OWN pace/mile

am i making any sense?!

http://www.biofreeze.com/

as for bio-freeze (above link), its this topical gel stuff, that comes in packets the same size as GU... you rub it on your //insert thing that hurts here// and it numbs the pain... when i ran my 22, this is the ONLY thing that got me thru...

have you heard of tiber balm? very similar.

i can't believe you havent been given this!! it was my savior... before your next run/elliptical thing, i'd definitely try this out.

just BE SURE TO WASH YOUR HANDS after you use it, because it'll sting like a @#$%& if you then get it in your eyes, etc... and also you dont wanna get it in your MOUTH..(or so i hear!) so just be careful if you use it and then eat GU.

:)

alright. my email is alejanmc@hotmail.com (or yahoo. or gmail. i'm ridiculously connected to my email) i feel bad leaving such long comments! tee!!
