The Whinery

6 a.m. swim: Practiced Total Immersion ("The revolutionary way to swim!") for 100m, as per swim coach's instructions, then swam for 30 minutes. IT SUCKED. I didn't think it was possible, but I have actually gotten slower.

5:30 p.m. Ran 3 miles, no walking: 32:48. Less suckage, but not pleasant. And couldn't go 'til late in the day, so now I'll be late getting home. Then late getting to eat, then late getting to bed, then I get to be tired again tomorrow!

I am still trying to figure out how to get in 2 quality swims a week, 3 runs, 2 decent bike rides, and 2 swim classes.

I am exhausted all the time, sick to DEATH of working, can't fit everything in, can't decide on my next race, and I have a long long LONG list of other complaints, but I don't have time to go into them now. When you don't even have time to COMPLAIN, you got a problem!

Keep hanging in there and doing the training. One day you will wake up and realize you are more fit than you've ever been and stronger and happier. You just have to get through the exhaustion and suckage part. It's worth it, though - really, really worth it.

Just answered your email.
I don't actually agree with 21CMom on the exhaustion and suckage part. You don't have to do everything all at once, in one year.
Whining is very important, don't neglect it!

Don't worry too much about going slower all of a sudden as you change your swim style. You'll find once you get used to it, you'll quickly incrase in speed. I found the same thing. It took a bit of getting used to before I was 'smooth' again after changes. In fact, every week as little things change in my stroke I slow down some and then readjust and get faster.

Born to run, swim, bike.. work.. parent... and just about everything!?!
It all has ups and downs.. but your interest, energy, and curiosity to keep exploring what you can do is inspiring.

I think it takes time to adjust and probably realigning some priorities too. I remember once thinking that just exercising 2-3 times a week for an hour was so time consuming (as opposed to just jogging whenever I felt like it).

As for TI, I agree with RM. There are some great swimming fundamentals that TI will teach you and to learn them you should not worry about speed. There are some things in TI, however, that did not work for me so I threw them out. I'd suggest giving it an honest effort for, say, 2-3 months and if it's not working for you take the good and leave the bad. Even the best swimmers in the world are constantly trying new things and working on their stroke to make it better.

PS - That last statement was not from me but rather from my current swim instructor who is a world-class masters swimmer and I've also heard the same thing from other excellent swimmers.

Hey, where'd you get a picture of my ex boyfriend? (Hope that cracked a smile on your face!)

I know how you feel. I have been wondering the same thing! I am working out six days a week between biking, swimming and running and I'm not really getting any biking in. Now that we are moving and I won't be doing the tri in November I think I'll cut the bike out entirely and focus on swimming and running. Still, it's a busy schedule. Especially when you have two young kids!

Hang in there! If you are feeling overwhelmed it may be time to take a day off. Sometimes doing that is the best medicine. And keep checking out the photo of that hunky mullet guy. That's got to give you some motivation, right ?!

Hang in there. It gets better eventually. Before you know it, the tri season will be over and you can concentrate more on your swimming durint the winter months so it will go easier next year.

Ha, ha. I had a mullet in 7th grade.

I have an answer to your problem. GIVE UP SWIMMING. The water is trying to kill you. See, easy.

I read palms too.

Even when you're down, you're funny.:-) I'm going through a similar thing; trying to fit what I want to do and what I need to do all in. Usually, what I want to do wins out.
