But apparently, somewhere along the way, I began to associate the 5:30 a.m. alarm with—are ya ready for this?—getting out of bed.
So I did.
I got up, got out, got on the bike and rode for 45 minutes, a new route.
It was a beautiful route. I started having fun again (in between moments of visualizing my gory death by Lexus out in tony Potomac, Maryland).
I got all the way through it until five minutes from home...FLAT!!! My third in 7 days. WTF?!?!
But I didn't let the flat throw me (literally). I just rode home on it.
But enough about that. Here's the really exciting news:
I'm IN!!
What happened was: I was on the wait list for the Annapolis Tri, Sept. 7, which was canceled; then the race director of Nation's (Sept. 14) decided to accept everyone who was signed up for Annapolis, except surely that did not include those on the waiting list, right? Wrong! A few e-mails later, I was in!
And just like that, my mood changed to this:
What can I say? One day I'm down and the next day I'm up (note to self: adjust meds).
But you all knew that already.

Jeanne, you should pump your tires about 10 over PSI. That way you won't get a flat so easy.
Good job on getting that early am work out in. 5am work outs are really nice once they are over!
YAY!!! See you there! The bike course is going to be a blast!!
That is SO exciting!!! I really would LOVE to do that race some day.
Get a new tire. You probably have some sort of rip in yours and stuff is getting through and giving you a flat.
Wow, that's huge news about Annapolis. Serious bummer there. :(
But awesome news about you an Nation's! I'll be there as well - it should be a blast of a race!
Congrats for getting into the Tri. I'm sure you'll rock!
The 5:30 alarm? Pavlov's dog theory. It goes off and you get a reward.
YAY! That's exciting! Some of the people I'm training with are going to Nations (including my coach).
omg. now i'm paranoid. what if i have a flat some day. i can't even change a tire.
Note to self: quit cycling.
Great job on getting up and getting it done!
Good news all around!!!! (Except the flat - DANG!)
Miss Thing get your tire to a bike shop - I bet you have a split in it somewhere.
'Atta Girl!
I'm considering carrying rocks to throw at cars that get too close, but need to keep the weight down. Maybe I can get some made of carbon fiber. ;-)
Good luck on the 14th!
Sweet dreams come true but only when you get up at 5:30.
call me a sap but your posts like this bring tears to my eyes. my DH is currently in a cyclic situation with d/a... it's not every day, more like 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off, and I just know when it's "off" it's so incredibly tough to "push through" and answer to that "5:30". Keep on keepin' on Jeanne. :)
That's great you're in the Nation's Tri. And thanks for publishing when it is cos I'll stay outta town for sure on that day!
You must be an expert at tire changing these days! Can you please make a video for me to watch?
Great news on the Nations Tri! Though I don't know anything about it ...I'm sure you'll tell me in your upcoming posts. Looking forward to hearing about it.
do you have any ideas how I can get in? When I saw there were still charity openings for Nations, I was so excited. My best friend is doing her first triathlon with TNT and really wanted my support. I figured out all my logistics, rented a bike, bought my plane ticket, and then, even though the web site didn't change at all during that time it took me to sort out all the logistics, I got shut out at the registration. help!
