Pardon Me for Whining

Small ills are the fountains of most of our groans. Men trip not on mountains, they stumble on stones.

No freakin' kidding.

This was the "Morning Mantra" awaiting me in my inbox today.

This week's headache started Saturday night. It's what I like to call a "loose brain" headache. The kind where when you stand up too fast, or bend over, your brains slosh around in your head. Fun.

It continued thru Sunday, while I went out on a very very short "hike" with the "over-40 group" at my church. (Turns out, this was the over-90 group. Sigh.)

Head was slammin' on Monday, all through bell-ringing class. So no running on Monday. Same thing on Tuesday. No running on Tuesday, and I skipped my meditation class, since listening to my head pound for 30 minutes would not have been very meditative. Instead, I opted to take some codeine-laced tylenol someone so kindly offered me. And slept from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. So Tuesday was Day Three of no running.

And, that brings us to this morning.

And I still have this %#!#% headache!!!

I told myself I will WALK four miles today if I have to.

Just how much fitness do you lose in a week if you don't run?

Let's change the subject ... check out Anne's thoughtful comments on DNF-ing.

Turns out, failure can mean success.

I think surprisingly that losing one week of running, especially in the taper, really doesn't make that much of a difference. But I hope that headache goes away!

Hope you get feeling better. It's sort of a forced taper. All the miles are in the bank

Thanks for the shoutout. Could the headache be from fall allergies or not drinking enough water? I tend to feel like I have the flu whenever the weather changes, even when I know I don't. And you may be surprised at how refreshing those legs feel after a bit of rest.

Whatever you are doing differently from what you have done the last 17 weeks - stop it! That's all the advice I can offer.
I hope it remedies itself with the warmer weather.

The taper is just the time to fix the little inconveniences before they have a chance to manifest during the big dance in a week and a half. You've already made the major deposits into the bank of marathon (taper is just nickel and dime stuff). The benefits of a few days off will surprise you! You can always do some maintenance mileage next week.

PS, Your blog is so entertaining. I was excited to read of another Bethesda runner! Good luck with your taper and tackling the MCM course in just a short time away!

you say 'whining' like its a bad thing?....I'm not following your thought processes there.
Hope the headache clears up soon :(
A week off will freshen you up and be a positive thing for the maratho. No, really.

Losing a week of training during tapering is no big deal, you'll still be strong on the big day. Hope your headache clears soon.

Bummer! Hopefully by the time you read this comment, your headache will be gone. And if it's not, hopefully you have some more access to Tylenol 3.

Not running this week won't screw you up... you'll still be great for the race.

Hang in there. Talk to the doctor if it continue anymore. It might be part of the taper crap.

Finally checking in on Friday. Is it better? I have a more important question: how's the stomach??? :)
